R-97-9 RESOLUTION AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP AND MEETING DATES OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX COMMISSION ON THE ARTS WHEREAS, the people of our City have demonstrated their interest in and support for local artistic and cultural endeavors by their attendance and participation therein; and WHEREAS, there exists within our community a reservoir of artistic talent that is valuable and appropriate to cultivate; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City of Fairfax to establish an official body to encourage, to promote and to provide opportuni- ty for artistic expression within our City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that There be reaffirmed as of the date of this resolution a body to be known as "The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts." The Commission shall be composed of ten (10) citizen members, each of whom shall serve three-year terms. One member would be a representative of the City Band, appointed by the City Band. The other additional nine (9) members would be appoint- ed by the City Council, although the Commission would ask for an exemption of city residency from one position so that the Commission could take advantage of the technical expertise available from George Mason University or other arts venues in the surrounding Central Fairfax area. The Commission meets during the months September through June. Members who miss three regular meetings within this ten-month period will be presumed to have resigned, and the Commission chairman will notify the City Clerk in writing, requesting advertisement to fill the vacancy. Consideration for extenuating circumstances will be given on an individual basis. 3. The Commission shall serve as 1) An arts facilitator, creating liaisons with and providing support to arts organizations; 2) An arts steward by fostering the development and enjoy- ment of the arts in our community; 3) An arts funds administrator, receiving and allocating City funds and funds from other sources for purposes of artistic encouragement; and 4) An information clearing house on artistic activity within and around the City of Fairfax; and The Commission shall present to the City Council in November of each year an annual report and a proposed budget for its activities for the next fiscal year.
