R-90-23 A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BASEBALL COMMISSION TO OBTAIN A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL FRANCHISE FOR THE WASHINGTON AREA WHEREAS, baseball is the national pastime, but the Nation's Capital has endured nineteen long years without representation by a major league baseball team; and WHEREAS, major league baseball would provide a positive impact on the Washington area's economic recreational, social and civic life; and ' WHEREAS, the Washington area has excellent physical facilities to support major league baseball, including an outstanding stadium easily accessible by a safer and efficient metrorail system, many new hotels and restaurants and other tourist facilities; and WHEREAS, baseball fans in the Washington area have indicated their strong support for a major league team by depositing funds in special bank accounts to enable them to buy season tickets when a team is established; and WHEREAS, pre-season major league exhibition games over the past four years in Washington have drawn larger crowds than have similar games in all cities competing for expansion franchises; and WHEREAS, a National League franchise in Washington would foster an even greater interest in baseball throughout the entire area, thus complementing the already successful American League franchise in Baltimore; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, hereby enthusiastically support the efforts of the District of Columbia Baseball Commission to obtain a major league baseball franchise for the Washington area; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Baltimore, the President of the National League, and the Commissioner of Baseball urging them to use the full power of their offices to return major league baseball to the Washington area.
