R-88-3 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SUBCOMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS ADDRESSING FUTURE OUTDOOR RECREATION NEEDS IN VIRGINIA WHEREAS, the Virginia General Assembly, recognizing the growing demands for outdoor recreation, created a special study committee through the passage of House Joint Resolution 204 during the 1987 session; and WHEREAS, the study committee found that Virginia's local parks and recre- ation facilities are vital to the quality of life in the Commonwealth; and WHEREAS, each year more of Virginia's greatest bounty, its land and waters, are lost to development; and WHEREAS, the demand for public recreation facilities and preserved open space continues to increase; and WHEREAS, federal funding to local leisure services delivery systems in 1987 was less than 1/10 of the funding eight years ago; and WHEREAS, federal assistance will probably cease due to the budgetary concerns, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that tile City of Fairfax supports all eleven recommendations of special study committee, especially Recommendation Number 1 (local funding assistance), Recommendation Number 10 (additional technical assistance staff), and Recommendation Number 11 (cooperative use of school facilities); and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Fairfax directs the City Manager to forward this resolution to the Honorable Jane Woods, House Delegate representing the 37th District, and the Honorable Emilie Miller, State Senator representing the 34th District, urging their support to this package as important to the quality of life of Virginia's citizens and especially to future generations of Virginians.
