R-83-8 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, ENCOURAGING THE VIRGINIA STATE LEGISLATURE TO RAISE THE MINIMUM AGE FOR PURCHASING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES TO TWENTY-ONE WHEREAS, the use and abuse of alcoholic beverages has become a major concern and problem to our society, and WHEREAS, a disproportionately large number of personal injuries and fatalities result from traffic accidents involving per- sons under the age of twenty-one who have been consuming alcoholic beverages; and WHEREAS, Virginia and other states have suffered a marked in- crease in accidents involving this age group when the drinking age is lowered, and WHEREAS, the present state law provides for the legal purchase of beer and wine for consumption on premises for eighteen- year-olds and for the purchase of such beverages for off-premises consumption for nineteen-year-olds, BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax does hereby encourage and recommend to the Virginia General Assembly that the minimum age limit for the on and off site pur- chase of all alcoholic beverages be established at twenty- one years of age.
