R-83-19 RESOLUTION OPPOSING USE OF CITY OF FAIRFAX HIGHWAYS BY TWIN-TRAILER TRUCKS WHEREAS, use of City of Fairfax highways by twin-trailer trucks as mandated by the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1983 would aggravate traffic con- gestion and pose a severe safety hazard to other vehicles due to the large turning movement required by such trucks, and WHEREAS, highways in the City of Fairfax, Virginia, currently are congested beyond the capacity to handle additional traffic efficiently, and WHEREAS, twin-trailer trucks would increase roadway wear and tear and increase noise and pollution which already are at a substantial level to cause concern to residents and business owners, and WHEREAS, Routes 29/50 are simultaneously in the City of Fairfax, and 29,000 cars travel this route every day, and within the City boundaries there are Il traffic lights including one traffic circle. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Council of the City of Fairfax does hereby oppose use of four-lane high= ways in the City of Fairfax by twin-trailer trucks as designated by the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1993, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: The Council's opposition to such vehicles be communicated to the Northern Virginia Planning District Commission and at a public hearing on May 3 being held by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation.
