R-83-28 ADOPTION OF A POLICY IN SUPPORT OF A JOINT EFFORT BY THE CITY OF FAIRFAX AND THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE CITY OF FAIRFAX WHEREAS, the quality of life in a City is enhanced by a strong and economically viable business community, and WHEREAS, it is recognized that a strong and viable economic base provides tangible benefits to the City by providing an enlarged and diversified tax base as well as additional income and employment opportunities to residents, and WHEREAS, it is recognized that an effective effort to promote the economic viability and visibility of the City can best be accomplished by a cooperative effort on the part of the City and the business community, and that such effort will be of mutual benefit; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Fairfax will work with the Chamber of Commerce to 1. Develop an aggressive and coordinated economic development campaign to attract and maintain businesses that meet the overall needs of the City; 2. Provide joint support for this economic development effort with appropriate staffing and funding; 3. Make recommendations to City Council regarding what the respective partnership responsibilities of City government, the business community and citizens should be in this cooperative venture; 4. Identify those types of compatible new businesses more likely to want to locate in the City and encourage them to do so; 5. Cooperate with and provide staff assistance to deal with the concerns of existing businesses in the City; and 6. Examine City codes and procedures and make changes where necessary to assist economic development activities. Adopted: July 12, 1983 1983-28 -2- ATTEST: CityLU1 er~(] CITY OF FAIRFAX: MayOr~x CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: ATTEST: President Executive Vice President O##LIICL City of Fairfax Chamber of Commerce 10856 Main Street, Fairfax, Va. 22030 · 591-5550 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the business community provides employment and income to the citizens of the City of Fairfax and represents a substantial portion of the tax base of the City; and, WHEREAS, the growth and development of the City's bus- iness community is essential to assure the continued economic vitality of the City; and, WHEREAS, the City Council has adopted a policy to promote economic development in the City in its resolution approved July 12, 1983, and has requested that the City Chamber of Commerce support its efforts for economic development in the City; and, WHEREAS, the Chamber of Commerce finds that the efforts of the City Council are positive and necessary steps that must be taken if the City is to retain its economic viability. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Fairfax City Chamber of Commerce applauds the foresight of the City Council in seeking to promote economic development in the City. The Chamber supports the efforts of the City Council and agrees to make recommendations to the Council to assist it in developing its economic development program, identifying the tupes of business enterprises which would be most likely to locate in the City, and amending the City Code and procedures to make the City more attractive to the business community. On request of the Council, the Chamber of Commerce agrees to designate Chamber members to represent the interests of the business community on any board or commission which the Council may create to carry out its efforts to promote economic development in the City.
