19800122 r-80-2Resolution No. R-80-2 Resolution in Support of NVTC Proposed One Percent Regional Sales Tax for Financing Metro WHEREAS, the National Capitol Transportation Act, predicates federal contributions to Metro on the establishment of a stable and reliable source of revenue from the jurisdictions participating in the WMATA Compact and, WHEREAS, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission has endorsed the version of the one percent sales tax for Northern Virginia tendered to the General Assembly in 1979 as the best method for assuring a stable and reliable source of revenue for Metro, and WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax desires to ensure continued Federal funding for the construction and operation of Metro and needs to provide a source of revenue for the City's contribution to Metro-rail operating costs, other than through real property taxes, now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, by the City Council of Fairfax, Virginia, that the City of Fairfax endorses the one percent sales tax proposal for Northern Virginia tendered to the Virginia General Assembly by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, and recommends that the proposal be amended to provide that tax receipts collected thereunder be retained by the respective juris- dictions for payment to NVTC for their allocable share of operating costs.
