R-76-1 WHEREAS, the United States Chess Federation has designated George Mason University as the site of the 1976 U.S. Open Chess Championship; and WHEREAS, Virginia Chess Federation, as "Local Sponsor" of the 1976 U.S. Open has, to date, 'raised more than $2,000 in private individual support for this premier event; and WHEREAS, George Mason University and the Board of the George Mason University Student Union are making the Student Union avail- able as playing site for the Open; and WHEREAS, hundreds of chessplayers together with families and friends will visit Fairfax City during the two weeks of the Open, August 15th to August 27th, 1976; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Fairfax City: A) Extends the City's most cordial welcome to the parti- cipants and visitors of this splendid event; B) Urges the citizens and merchants of Fairfax City to support the U.S. Open's donation prize fund; and further C) Urges the residents of the City of Fairfax to welcome hospitably, as feasible, our chess playing visitors; and further D) Recommends that all local organs of media communications give the maximum coverage to the U.S. Open; E) Designates August 15-27, 1976 as "U.S. Open Weeks-- Bicentennial 1976."
