19720321 r-72-6 RESOLUTION R-72-6 WHEREAS, the water supply problems of the Washington Metropolitan Area have been the subject of enumerable studies and reports over the last several decades, which have produced no de- monstrable action; and WHEREAS, it has been amply demonstrated by these studies that the water supply problem is reaching crisis proportions; and WHEREAS, an adequate water supply is a primary requisite to the continued growth and stability of the Washington Metropoli- tan Area; and WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax, Virginia, provides a small portion of the water supply of the metropolitan area; and WHEREAS, the individual water suppliers in the metropoli- tan area are unable to meet the major needs of the metropolitan area; and WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers has proposed the construc- tion of six dams on the tributaries of the Potomac to augment water supply; and WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives Public Works Committee has not taken any positive action concerning the Corps of Engineers' proposal; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, 1. Endorses the construction proposal of the Corps of Engineers for the augmentation of the Washington Metropolitan Area water supply, and 2. Urges the United States Senate, through its Public Works Committee, to consider the Corps of Engineers' proposal and take positive action by authorizing the necessary appropriations to R-72-6 -2 begin immediate construction of two of the six proposed dams; i. e., Sixes Bridges' Dam and Verona Dam.
