AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 82 (STREETS, SIDEWALKS AND OTHER
PUBLIC PLACES), ARTICLE II (PROPERTY NUMBERS; STREET NAMES), TO
UPDATE AND CLARIFY CERTAIN PROVISIONS RELATING TO THE PROCESS
FOR NUMBERING PROPERTIES AND PRINCIPAL BUILDINGS WITHIN THE
CITY
IT IS HEREBY ORDAINED, by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, that
Chapter 82, Article II of the Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, be and the same is amended,
as follows:
"Sec. 82-31. - Uniform numbering system adopted.
A uniform system of numbering properties and principal buildings, as shown on the citv's
official Geo a hic Information System address and buildin datasets ("GIS Files"
identified by the ti-00 20 f-fieia! Stfeet Names and Property Numbering Alias", whieh is filed in
the odes of the city engineer, is hereby established. Such GIS Files atlas -and -Al explanate�y
.naRers the,.,,ea- are hereby adopted and made a part of this article.
Sec. 82-32. - Assignment of numbers.
All properties or parcels of land within the city shall be identified by reference to the
uniform numbering system adopted by this article. Numbers shall be assigned by the city
manager or hi -,designee in conformity with the atlas and uniform numbering system adopted
by this article.
Sec. 82-33. - Determination of numbers for buildings; separate entrances to buildings.
Each principal building shall bear the number assigned to the frontage on which the front
entrance is located. In case a principal building is occupied by more than one business or
family dwelling unit, each separate front entrance of such principal building shall bear a
separate number.
Sec. 82-34. - Numerals on buildings.
Numerals indicating the official numbers for each principal building or each front
entrance to such building shall be posted in a manner as to be visible and distinguishable from
the street on which the property is located.
Sec. 82-35. - Assignment of numbers in new subdivisions.
Numbers shall be assigned by the city manager or designee engineer -to each proposed lot
or tract on preliminary subdivision plats.

No building permit shall be issued for any structure shall until the owner or developer has

Sec. 82-37. - Record to be kept of numbers assigned.
The office of the city GIS mana erengineef shall keep a record of all numbers assigned
under this article.
Sec. 82-38. - Street names.
Names of streets within the city, as shown on the GIS Files as identified by the tit e
"Offieial Street Names and Prepo.-ty , umb �n., Atlas," are hereby declared the official
names of such streets, unless officially changed by subsequent resolution-ao4ea of the city
council.
Sec. 82-39. - Administration of article.
The city manager or designeshall be responsible for maintaining the official
numbering system adopted by this article and shall possess and assume the responsibility for
the administration of this article. Any renumbering and/or secondary addressingshall be in
accordance with standards promulgated by the city manager or designee with_authoritunder
this article.
Sec. 8240. - Compliance with article.
It shall be unlawful for any person to violate any provision of this article or to fail to
comply with any directive of the city mana er or des' eeenginee issued pursuant to and in
compliance with this article.
