A RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING CITIZENS AND EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY
OF FAIRFAX TO WEAR CLOTH MASKS WHEN IN SETTINGS WHERE OTHER
SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES ARE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN,
INCLUDING IN PUBLIC AND WITHIN BUSINESSES.
WHEREAS, On April 3, 2020 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) made the
recommendation for the wearing of cloth face coverings (surgical masks or self -manufactured
masks) in public settings (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of
significant community -based transmission. The CDC advised the use of cloth face coverings
will slow the spread of the virus and help prevent transmission by people who may have the
virus and not know; and
WHEREAS, On April 6, 2020, the City of Fairfax Office of Risk Management
released a Safety Informational Bulletin supporting and encouraging employees to follow the
CDC recommendation both while at work and in daily public activities. This is especially true
when employees have a limited ability to practice social distancing. Wearing a cloth face
covering prevents coughs and speaking droplets from being expelled/aerosolized and is one
additional measure to keep others safe.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of
Fairfax, Virginia, that in accordance with recommended guidance from the Center for
Disease Control and the City of Fairfax Office of Risk Management that, to the extent
practical, City personnel, citizens and visitors to the City of Fairfax are encouraged to wear
cloth face coverings when in settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to
maintain, including public spaces, within city facilities and private businesses and continue
social distancing, a minimum of six feet of distance between people.
