RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE VISION, GOALS AND STRATEGIES OF THE
BUS TRANSFORMATION PROJECT
WHEREAS, The metropolitan Washington region relies on an integrated transportation
network, in which bus transportation provides an affordable mobility option and
plays a key role in reducing roadway congestion, increasing connections
between residents, jobs, education, healthcare, and other opportunities, and
supporting regional prosperity; and
WHEREAS, Bus providers across the region and across the country are contending with
significant challenges as bus speeds are declining, ridership is falling, and
innovations in the transportation industry have outpaced public transit
innovations; and
WHEREAS, The City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan identifies local and regional
transit, including bus transit, as a key component to improve mobility choices
and promote transit -oriented development in activity centers; and
WHEREAS, The City of Fairfax has a vested interest in making bus transit a more attractive
and efficient transportation option, both as an owner and operator of a local bus
system and as a compact member and fiscal contributor to WMATA's Metrobus
system;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council endorses the vision, goals
and strategies of the Bus Transformation Project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council directs staff to continue collaborating
with WMATA and other regional stakeholders to improve bus transportation in
the region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the adoption of this resolution does not constitute a
commitment by the City to fund or implement specific actions in the Bus Transformation
Project, as implementation is subject to budgetary constraints in both the City's and
WMATA's annual budgets.
