RESOLUTION TO APPROVE AND ADOPT THE CITY OF FAIRFAX 2035
COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
WHEREAS, § 15.2-2223 of the Code of Virginia requires the City Council to adopt a
comprehensive plan for the physical development of the territory within the jurisdiction of
the City of Fairfax; and
WHEREAS, the Code of Virginia requires that the Planning Commission prepare and
recommend to City Council a comprehensive plan for the physical development of the
territory within its jurisdiction and that it be reviewed at least once every five years to
determine whether it is advisable to amend the plan; and
WHEREAS, the City Council adopted edits to the existing comprehensive plan on April 10,
2012 and recommended the Planning Commission commence with development of a new
comprehensive plan; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan has been prepared with the
purpose of guiding and accomplishing a coordinated, adjusted and harmonious development
of the City which will, in accordance with present and probable future needs and resources,
best promote the health, safety, welfare, convenience, prosperity and general welfare of the
inhabitants, including the elderly and persons with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the Planning Commission held a public hearing on December 10, 2018 and
recommended approval and adoption of the draft City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan
to City Council, and further accepted the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan
Implementation Guide as a resource to support implementation of the recommendations of
the comprehensive plan; and
WHEREAS, the draft City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan as recommended for
approval by the Planning Commission has been posted on the City website in accordance
with § 15.2-2226 of the Code of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the City Council held work sessions to discuss draft City of Fairfax 2035
'Comprehensive Plan as recommended for approval by the Planning Commission on January
18, 2019 and February 5, 2019; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with §15.2-2226 of the Code of Virginia, the City Council of
the City of Fairfax held a public hearing on February 12, 2019 for the purpose of receiving
comments related to the proposed City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax hereby
approves the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan and adopts the draft dated February 6,
2019, which will supersede the previous comprehensive plan and all amendments thereto.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax hereby accepts
the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan Implementation Guide in the draft dated February
6, 2019 as a resource to support implementation of the recommendations of the comprehensive
plan, which may be amended by the Planning Commission without additional formal action.
