R-14-11 RESOLUTION NO. R-14-11 A RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE PROCEEDING WITH THE REQUIREMENTS TO PLACE AN ADVISORY REFERENDUM ON THE NOVEMBER 4,2014 BALLOT,WITH RESPECT TO THE QUESTION OF CHANGING THE TERMS OF OFFICE, FROM TWO YEARS TO FOUR YEARS, FOR CITY COUNCILMEMBERS,THE MAYOR AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD WHEREAS, Section 3.8 of the City Charter authorizes the City Council, by majority vote of the entire Council, to submit to the qualified voters of the City for advisory purposes any question relating to the affairs of the City; and WHEREAS, the City Council desires to submit to the qualified voters of the City, for advisory purposes, the question set forth below pertaining to a prospective change in the length of terms of office, from two years to four years, for City Councilmembers, the Mayor and the members of the School Board. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, that the City Attorney, in consultation with the City Registrar, shall take the necessary steps, including but not limited to requesting that the Circuit Court issue a Writ of Election, to have the following advisory referendum question placed on the ballot on November 4, 2014, the same day as the next City general election: "Do you support changing the length of the terms of office for City Councilmembers, the Mayor, and the members of the School Board from the current two (2)years to four (4)years?" BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, pursuant to the requirements of the City Charter, the results of this advisory referendum shall be non-binding upon the City Council.
