Street Naming and House Numbering Ordinance Ordinance No.
AN ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE A UNIFORM SYSTEM FOR
NUMBERING PROPERTIES AND PRINCIPAL BUILDINGS
AND ESTABLISHING STREET NAMES IN THE CITY OF FAIRFAX
BE IT ORDAINED and enacted by the City Council of the City of
Fairfax, Virginia, as follows:
1. Uniform numbering system
A uniform system of numbering properties and principal build-
ings, as shown on the map identified by the title "Official Street
Names and Property Numbering Atlas, " which is filed in the office
of the City Planner is hereby established. This atlas and all ex-
planatory matters thereon, is hereby adopted and made a part of
this ordinance.
2. Assignment of numbers
(a) All properties or parcels of land within the limits of
the City of Fairfax shall hereafter be identified by reference to
the uniform numbering system adopted herein, provided; all existing
numbers of property and buildings not now in conformity with provi-
sions of this ordinance shall be changed to conform to the system
herein adopted within sixty (60) days from the date of notification
i of nonconformity by the Office of the City Planner.
(b) Each principal building shall bear the number assigned
to the frontage on which the front entrance is located. In case a
principal building is occupied by more than one business or family
dwelling unit, each separate front entrance of such principal build-
ing shall bear a separate number.
(2)
(c) Numerals indicating the official numbers for each princi-
pal building or each front entrance to such building shall be
posted in a manner as to be visible and distinguishable from the
street on which the property is located.
(d) Numbers will be assigned by the City Planner in conformity
with the Atlas and uniform system, hereby adopted.
3. Adminstration
(a) The City Planner shall be responsible for maintaining the
numbering system being guided by the provisions of Section 2 of this
ordinance.
(b) Numbers will be assigned by the City Planner to each pro-
, posed lot or tract on preliminary subdivision plats.
(c) No building permit shall be issued for any structure until
the owner or developer has procured from the City Planner the offi-
cial number of the premises. Final approval for occupancy of any
structure erected or repaired after the effective date of this
ordinance shall be withheld until permanent and proper numbers have
been affixed to said structure in accordance with the requirements
of this ordinance.
(d) The Office of the City Planner shall keep a record of all
numbers assigned under this ordinance.
(e) In the absence of a City Planner the City Engineer shall
possess and assume the responsibility for administration of this
ordinance.

declared the official names of said streets unless officially
changed by subsequent action of the City Council.
5. Penalties
Any person who shall violate any provision of this ordinance
or who shall fail to comply with any directive of the City Planner
issued pursuant to and in compliance with this ordinance shall be
guilty of a misdemeanor and may be punished by a fine of from $5.00
to $300.00.

Darby Street. A change to Darby Place was proposed and notices
were mailed accordingly.
We find that the retention of the name Darby Street will
result in the least confusion to all concerned and we, therefore,
wish to advise you that Darby Street is your official address.
We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may have caused

the proper name for Burke Road within the City limits of Fairfax,
I would like to inform you that Burke Road is the recognized name
for use within the City.
To the best of my knowledge, there is no intention
of changing the name of Burke Road to Burke Station Road, or any
other name, at this time.

Dear Bill:
I had a call from some people on Burke Road, who tell
me that the change of address cards they have received
tell tham that their new address will be Burke Station Road,
but that the street signs will not be changed. It seems to
me that we must do one or the other, and since we have taken
no action to change the name of the road to Burke Station
Road, it would be preferable to notify the people that their
address will remain Burke Road. This would at least save us
the expense of a new street sign.
Enclosed herewith you will find a two-page article,
clipped from the American City Magazine, about tree planting.
I would appreciate it if you would give copies to the
Council members at the next meeting. I assume that the pages
can be xeroxed.
