CITY COUNCIL 1V1EETINGS
VV"HEREAS" the Ci-ty Charter", Chapter 5" Section 5.5" states that. the first n--..ecting of
the ne'-Vly elect:ed City Council shall t.ake place in the Council chamber at the City Hall on the
first Tuesday of July follov.ring its election; and
~HEREAS" the time" place and dates of future meetings may be determined by the
City Council; and
V\THEREAS, it: is the policy of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act that affairs of
govemment be transacted in public; and
V\THEREAS, the City Council is desirou.s of conducting effective and efficient
meetings vvith maximum public participation and kn.ovvledge in full vie'-V OT the public eye;
and
""\N"HEREAS, the City Council is desirous of and -vvill attempt to complete city business
in three (3) meetings each month;
NOv.r, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
1 . The first Tuesday of each month shall be reserved for V\Tork sessions" intervievvs"
special meetings" and closed meetings" as necessary. The second and fourth Tuesday
of each month shall be regular City Council meetings for public hearings and other
action items. The third Tuesday of each month shall be reserved for special meetings
and meetings vv-ith boards and commissions and other groups" as necessary.
2. :M:eetings arld intervie-vvs generally shall not be scheduled to start before 7:00 p.m.
3. The meetings generally shall be designed to end no later than 10:30 p.m.
4. Should extensive public vvork sessions or special meetings of City Council be
necessary" it shall be determi:ned by the l'v1:ayor and shall be scheduled as appropriate
and shall be publicly announced,. at ""hich time the subject matter '-ViII also be
announced.
5. The J:viayor and the City :M:anager shall set the proposed City Council agenda.
6. City Council meetings shall not be scheduled in August,. if possible.
