A RESOLUTION TO NAlVlE
THE HONORABLE JOHN C "'OOD CITY COUNCIL CHAlVlBER
'lVHEREAS, Jolm C. 'lVooct, a resident of 'the CommollVV"ealth of Virginia from 1936
until his death in 1994, overcame great challenges in his life and became one of the most
influential leaders to serve the City of Fairfax; and
V\THEREAS" he served VV"ith distinction as the founding lV1ayor of the City of Fairfax
and the former Tovvn of Fairfax for eleven years from 1953 to 1964 and '-"'as instrumental in
the declaration of the City's independence from the County of Fairfax; and
V\THEREAS" during his tenure" ~ayor John C. "VV"ood vvas influential in the
establishment of the City's vrvater supply system vvith the construction of the Goose Creek
Dam providing the City V\lith its ovvn independent vvater supply; and
-vYHEREAS" eager to support George M:ason College, in 1959, l\I1ayor John C. "VVood,
vvith consent orthe City Council, officially deeded a ISO-acre tract ofland to the University
of Virginia for a permanent: home ror the college on the City's southern border; and
"VVHEREAS, ~Tohr1 C. "VVood 's additional contributions to the City of Fairfax include
being the first Rector of the George l\I1ason University Board of Visitors, helping to shape the
vision of the Universities gro"VVth to this day, an honor l\I1r. "VVood al"VVays held dear to his
heart; and
"VVHEREAS, the charity of Johr1 C. VV"ood and his vvife Louise has been highlighted by
George .M-ason University through the ""ood Scholarship, given to a George I\t1:ason Student
vvho has overcome challenging obstacles as -vvell as the John C and Louise P. "VVood
Scholarship aV\Tarded to a graduate student vvho has demonstrated unusual motivation and
ability in pursuit of an education; and
"VVHEREAS, Johr1 C. VV"ood, his ""ife Louise and t-vvo children Anne and Johrl should
take great pride in his accomplished lire.
NOVV, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax,
Virginia, hereby names the ne"" City of Fairfax Council Chamber as ....The Honorable John.. C.
V\Tood l\I1emorial City Council Chamber", in recognition orhis leadership in planning and
implementing a plan for the ruture of the City ofF~airfax.
