AN OFt.DINANCE AJVJ:ENDING CHAPTEFt. 2, ARTICLE V, DIVISION 3,
SECTION 2-252 AND 2-253 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX,
VIRGINIA, REGARDING THE JVJ:EJVJ:BERSHIP OF
THE COJVJ:JVJ:UNITY APPEARANCE COJVJ:JVJ:ITTEE.

Fairfax is hereby amended as follo",,"s:
Sec. 2-252. IVIembers generally ~
(a) The community appearance committee shall consist of ten voting members,. all of-
"'\..7Vhom shall be appointed by the city council and one ex officio member or the
City staff. All appointees or the community appearance committee shall be
residents or the city.
(b) The Director or Public "VVorks, or his designee, shall serve as the ex orficio
member, shall hold no office Oll the Committee, shall have no voting rights" and
shall not be counted to establish a quorum.
(c) One member shall be appointed rrom among the membership of the board of
architectural revie'-V and one member each shall be appointed from lists ot~
nominees submitted by:
(1) A Representative of the Business Community; ar1d
(2) A local garden club.
(d) The remaining members shall be appointed from among the citizens-at-large., one
of '-Vhom shall be an architect or landscape architect.
(e) The term of the member appointed by the board of architectural revievv shall
coincide '-Vith the term of the board of architectural revieV\T. The terms ot~ all other
members of the community appearance committee shall be for three years_
(f) At the first meeting of each calendar year~ the commnnity appearance committee
shall elect a chairman and vice-chairmar1 from among its membership to serve for
a term of one year '-Vith eligibility for reelection_ In conducting such elections" the
committee shall consider "'the advisabili"'ty of rotating the chairmanship among its
members_
(g) Vacancies occurring in the community appearance committee for reasons other
than the expiration of terms shall be filled as they occur for the period of the
unexpired term. l\I1embers may be immediately reappointed upon the expiration of-
their terms.
(h) N1embers of the commnnity appearance committee shall serve '-Vithout pay but
may be reimbursed for actual expenses incident to the performance o:t~ their duties_
(i) ~embers of the community appearance commiUee may be removed for cause by a
t'-Vo-thirds vo"'te of the counciL
Sec. 2-253. Organizat::ion, records and meet::ings.
The community appearance committee shall adopt rules for the transaction OT its
business and shall keep records of its discussions" findings and recommendations~ vv-hich
records shall be transcribed and :filed by city staff and open to the public. l\.IIeetings of the
community appearance committee shall be held periodically as called by "'the chairman or at
request of a majority of the committee. l\I1eetings of the community appearance committee
shall be open to the public" as provided in The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of
Virginia, S 2.1-340 et seq.).
This ordinance shall become effective as provided by 1 a,^,"_
