20011009 2001-12ORDINANCE NO. 2001- 12 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 110-181(a) (Table 1), ARTICLE II, DIVISION 7, CHAPTER 110 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA REGARDING RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IDENTIFICATION SIGNAGE. WHEREAS, residential development identification signs are convenient for residents and provide good markers for the public safety departments; and WHEREAS, not all neighborhood identification signs would be clearly visible when placed within the required twenty feet from the public right-of-way; and WHEREAS, freestanding neighborhood identification signs can be attractive and compatible with the visual characteristics of a neighborhood; and WHEREAS, installation of such signage is consistent with the intent and purpose of the comprehensive plan to enhance neighborhoods and foster civic pride; and WHEREAS, freestanding residential development identification signs are compatible with the intent of the Sign Ordinance, which is to provide for adequate but not excessive signage. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, that Section 110-181(a) (Table I), Article II, Division 7, Chapter 110 of the Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, is hereby replaced in its entirety as follows: Sec. 110-181. Ground-mounted signs for multitenant commercial establishments are addressed in subsection 110-180(b)(2). **Note: Freestanding residential development signs may be located closer to or within the public right-of-way if the City Manager or his designee determines that the public safety will not be compromised, and the design and placement of such signs are consistent with the goals, objectives, and strategies contained in the comprehensive plan and other city policies. The ordinance shall become effective as provided by law.
