AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 42, ARTICLE III
OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FAIR_FAX, VIRGINIA, BY
AMENDING SECTION 42-66, PERTAINING TO THE
CHAIN OF COMMAND FOR CAREER AND VOLUNTEER
PERSONNEL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF FIRE AND
RESCUE SERVICES.
BE IT ORDAINED, by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, that Chapter 42,
Article III, Section 42-66 of the Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, is hereby amended to
read in its entirety as follows:
Sec. 42-66. Chain of Command.
There shall be one integrated chain of command for career or volunteer personnel of
the department of fire and rescue services. Within this chain of command, the deputy chief
shall serve as second in command of the operations division of the department of fire and
rescue services. This chain of command shall establish an organizational structure that
provides for career and volunteer personnel to be promoted to each officer position, as may be
required. All candidates shall meet the minimum qualifications referred to in section 42-65.
Appointed, elected or promoted officers shall have the authority commensurate with their
respective positions and be afforded appropriate respect at all times by career and volunteer
personnel of subordinate rank. The application of authority of officers shall be in accordance
with departmental standard operating procedures and policies.
This ordinance shall become effective as provided by law.
