AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 26 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF
FAIRFAX TO ESTABLISH CRITERIA FOR BAR MEMBERSHIP
BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, that
Section 26-204 of the Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia be and hereby
is deleted and replaced in its entirety with the following:
"For the purpose of making effective the provisions of this article, there
is hereby created a Board of Architectural Review (BAR). This board shall
be composed of seven (7) members appointed by the City Council. Require-
ments for Board membership are as follows:
a)
All appointees shall have a demonstrated interest, competence, or
knowledge in historic preservation.
b) At least one appointee shall be an architect or architectural
historian.

At least one additional appointee shall have professional train-
ing or equivalent experience in architecture, history, archi-
tectural history, archeology, or planning.
One appointee shall be selected from among the membership of the
Planning Commission.
e)
One appointee shall be selected from a list of nominations solicited
from organized business associations. Such nominees shall be busi-
nesspersons in the City, but do not have to be members of an organi-
zed business association.
Standards for demonstrating interest, competence or knowledge in historic
preservation and standards for determining professional qualifications shall
be as established by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Conservation
and Historic Resources for the Certified Local Government Program.
Members shall be appointed for staggered terms of three (3) years; provided,
however, that the term of the Planning Commission member shall be further
limited by that member's term on the Commission. Any member of the BAR may
be removed from office for cause by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the City
Council. Any appointment to fill a vacancy shall be only for the unexpired
portion of the term."
