19770412 1977-14ORDINANCE No. 1977- 14 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 3.101 OF THE ZONING CODE OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, TO REQUIRE RAMPS ON CURBS OF CERTAIN STREETS AND TO PROVIDE THE SPECIFICATIONS THEREFORE. WHEREAS, Section 15.1-381 of the 1950 Code of Virginia, as amended, provides that the governing bodies of every city requirin curbs along its streets shall require that there be constructed not less than two ramps per lineal block leading to the crosswalks at intersections for use of handicapped persons and provides required specifications therefore; BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, that Section 3.101 of the Zoning Code of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, requiring ramps on curbs of certain streets and providing certain specifications therefore, be and it hereby is amended as follows: Section 3.101 is hereby repealed and in its place is substi- tuted Section 3.101 to read in its entirety as follows: "3.101 Ail curbs constructed or replaced after the effective date hereof shall include not less than two ramps per lineal block leading to the crosswalks at intersections for the use of handicapped persons. Such ramps shall be at least forty-eight inches wide and have a gradient not greater than five percent, unless the difference between the sidewalk and the paved right of way is such as to make a five percent grade impractical, in which case the ramp shall be installed so as to adjust to the grade of the street and sidewalk. Such ramps Shall be located at intersections diagonally so as to preserve curbs for use by the blind, at the crosswalk itself, where curbs exist. This requirement shall not apply to curbs where no sidewalks are in existence. This ordinance shall take effect immediately upon its adoptio~ Adopted: April 12, 1977 Attest:
