20000912 r-00-44 RESOLUTION R-00-44 RESOLUTION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND MISSION OF THE CITY-UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE WHEREAS, on February 5, 1979, the City Council established the City/University/Business Community Committee to report and make recommendations on the relationships and roles of the community and the University; and WHEREAS, the Committee has been a valuable resource to the City, the University and the business community; and WHEREAS, in 1997, following review of the Committee's role and responsibilities, it was reorganized as the City-University Coordinating Committee (CUCC); and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to periodically review the Committee's organization and role and such review has been accomplished; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: 1. The existing CUCC Committee shall be renamed the City-University Committee and will continue to play the principal role in ensuring the coordination of mutual interests between the City of Fairfax and George Mason University. 2. The mission of the City-University Committee is to support creation of a world-class community for the 21st Century that enhances the "town and gown" relationship between the City of Fairfax and George Mason University. 3. The membership of the City-University Committee is established as follows: City Council shall sit as a committee of the whole; the mayor will serve as the City's co-chair. b. The City Manager or his designee shall represent the city staff and coordinate preparation of the City-hosted Committee agendas. c. Two members of the George Mason University senior administrative staff. GMU to coordinate preparation of GMU-hosted Committee agendas. d. The following shall be invited to participate: - Braddock District Supervisor of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors - City of Fairfax School Superintendent - Representatives of the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce. 4. Terms of office for membership shall be as follows: a. City Council members' terms shall be concurrent with their two-year term of office. b. All other terms shall continue at the pleasure of the organization represented. o The City/University Committee is charged with the following: a. Identify opportunities to cooperate and to address concerns in which the City and the University are mutually interested and which promise improvements in the R-00-44 -2 The City/University Committee is charged with the following: Identify opportunities to cooperate and to address concems in which the City and the University are mutually interested and which promise improvements in the effectiveness, economic health and environment of all entities; and Propose to the City Council and the President of George Mason University programs and courses of action that the City-University Committee recommends in carrying out this charge; and Co Identify research capabilities, facilities, educational programs, cultural and athletic attractions and other assets and offerings of the University that could be more fully utilized by the City of Fairfax government, its citizens and the business community; and do Identify and encourage opportunities for University faculty and staff to participate in, and take advantage of, the City's cultural and recreational opportunities; and To meet on a quarterly basis alternately hosted by the City or GMU to coordinate and plan projects and events that affect the City and George Mason University; and To appoint ad hoc or standing committees as needed to work on specific projects or issues; and go Undertake such other deliberations and activities as are consistent with the spirit of this charge.
