19980707 r-98-37RESOLUTION R-98-37 CITY COUNCIL GOALS, 1998 - 2000 WHEREAS, the motto of the City "Fare Fac" - Speak-Do - derives from the Fairfax family and reminds of the need to follow up words with action; and WHEREAS, the city has accepted the principal recommendations of "Tradition with Vision," the 2020 Commission Report designed to guide the City of Fairfax into the 21st Century; and WHEREAS, preliminary steps have already been undertaken to implement the 2020 Commission recommendations, to include rehabilitation of the city's infrastructure, rehabilitation of Old Town Fairfax, and responsive public safety; and WHEREAS, significant challenges remain to position the city to compete in the 21st Century; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council establishes as its goals for its 1998 - 2000 term of office 1. Continued emphasis on residential and community rejuvenation to include: Working with the School Board to enhance the quality, image, and reputation of the city school system. A housing improvement program that provides for incentives for residential renovation and maintenance, eliminates blight, and encourages the development of move-up housing. Preserving the small town character and sense of community that have been a cherished hallmark of the city. A renewed commitment to an aggressive economic development program, to include: Completing the preparations for the Chain Bridge Gateway, Northfax, and Old Town Fairfax redevelopment projects; Maintaining an emphasis on the aesthetic values of the community as expressed in the Community Appearance Plan; c. Providing incentives for encouraging private sector development and; d. Developing an aggressive tourism and visitor program. Development ora long range facilities plan that will address: a. Improved space utilization of city offices to include a study of possible renovation, consolidation or relocation of offices and uses at J.C. Wood, City Hall, and the Sisson House. b. Determining the reuse of vacated school sites due to renovation and consolidation of elementary schools. 1 R-98-37 -2 Positioning the city to influence the discussion of the restructuring of the Virginia statewide tax system necessitated by the inequitable allocation of revenue sources available to municipalities.
