19970325 r-97-09RESOLUTION NO. R-97-9
RESOLUTION AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP AND MEETING DATES
OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX COMMISSION ON THE ARTS
WHEREAS, the people of our City have demonstrated their
interest in and support for local artistic and cultural endeavors
by their attendance and participation therein; and
WHEREAS, there exists within our community a reservoir of
artistic talent that is valuable and appropriate to cultivate; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City of Fairfax to establish
an official body to encourage, to promote and to provide opportuni-
ty for artistic expression within our City;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that
There be reaffirmed as of the date of this resolution a body
to be known as "The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts."
The Commission shall be composed of ten (10) citizen members,
each of whom shall serve three-year terms. One member would
be a representative of the City Band, appointed by the City
Band. The other additional nine (9) members would be appoint-
ed by the City Council, although the Commission would ask for
an exemption of city residency from one position so that the
Commission could take advantage of the technical expertise
available from George Mason University or other arts venues in
the surrounding Central Fairfax area. The Commission meets
during the months September through June. Members who miss
three regular meetings within this ten-month period will be
presumed to have resigned, and the Commission chairman will
notify the City Clerk in writing, requesting advertisement to
fill the vacancy. Consideration for extenuating circumstances
will be given on an individual basis.
3. The Commission shall serve as
1)
An arts facilitator, creating liaisons with and providing
support to arts organizations;
2)
An arts steward by fostering the development and enjoy-
ment of the arts in our community;
3)
An arts funds administrator, receiving and allocating
City funds and funds from other sources for purposes of
artistic encouragement; and
4)
An information clearing house on artistic activity within
and around the City of Fairfax; and
The Commission shall present to the City Council in November
of each year an annual report and a proposed budget for its
