19970722 r-97-33 RESOLUTION R-97-33 RESOLUTION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND MISSION OF THE COMMUNITY-UNIVERSITY COORDINATING COUNCIL WHEREAS, on February 5, 1979, the City Council established the City/University/Business Community Committee to report and make recommendations on the relationships and roles of the community and the University; and WHEREAS, the Committee has been a valuable resource to the City, the University and the business community; WHEREAS, it is appropriate to review the Committee's organiza- tion and role and such review has been accomplished; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The existing CUB Committee shall be renamed the Community- University Coordinating Council and will continue to play the principal role in ensuring the coordination of mutual inter- ests between the City of Fairfax and George Mason University. The mission of the Coordinating Council is to support creation of a world-class community for the 21st Century that enhances the "town and gown" relationship between the City of Fairfax and George Mason University. The membership of the Coordinating Council is established as follows: City Council shall appoint two of its members, one of whom shall be appointed by the mayor as chair. b. The City Manager shall represent the city staff. c. The following shall be invited to participate: - Braddock District Supervisor of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors - City of Fairfax School Superintendent - Representative of the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce - Two members of the George Mason University senior administrative staff 4. Terms of office for membership shall be as follows: City Council members' terms shall be concurrent wit? their two-year term of office. Ail other members' terms shall continue at the pleasure of the organizations they represent. The Community-University Coordinating council is charged with the following: Identify opportunities to cooperate and to address concerns in which the City, the University and the business community are mutually interested and which promise improvements in the effectiveness, economic health and environment of all entities; and R-97-33 -2- Co fo Propose to the City Council and the President of George Mason University programs and courses of action the Coordinating Council recommends in carrying out this charge; and Identify research capabilities, facilities, educational programs, cultural and athletic attractions and other assets and offerings of the University that could be more fully utilized by the City of Fairfax government, its citizens and the business community; and Identify and encourage opportunities for University faculty and staff to participate in, and take advantage of, the City's cultural and recreational opportunities; and To meet at least quarterly to coordinate and plan projects and events which affect the City, George Mason University, and the business community; and To appoint ad hoc or standing committees as needed to work on specific projects or issues; and Undertake such other deliberations and activities as are consistent with the spirit of this charge.
