CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS
WHEREAS, the City Charter, Chapter 5, Section 5.5, states that
the first meeting of the newly elected Council shall take place in
Council Chambers in the City Hall at eight o'clock p.m. on the
first Tuesday of July following its election; and
WHEREAS, the time, place and dates of future meetings may be
determined by the City Council; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Virginia Freedom of Informa-
tion Act that affairs of government be transacted in public; and
WHEREAS, the City Council is desirous of conducting effective
and efficient meetings with maximum public participation and
knowledge in full view of the public eye; and
WHEREAS, the city Council is desirous of and will attempt to
complete city business in three meetings each month;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
The first Tuesday of each month shall be reserved for work
sessions, interviews, special meetings, and executive ses-
sions, as necessary. The second and fourth Tuesday of each
month shall be regular City Council meetings for public
hearings and other action items. The third Tuesday of each
month shall be reserved for special meetings and meetings with
boards and commissions and other groups, as necessary.
Meetings and interviews generally shall not be scheduled to
start before 7:30 p.m.
The meetings generally shall be designed to end no later than
11:00 p.m.
Should extensive public work sessions or special meetings of
Council be necessary, it shall be determined by the Mayor and
shall be scheduled as appropriate and shall be publicly
announced, at which time the subject matter will also be
announced.
The Mayor and the City Manager shall set the proposed Council
agenda.
City Council meetings shall not be scheduled in August, if
possible.
