19910409 r-91-14RESOLUTION NO. R-91-14 RESOLUTION URGING THE NATIONAL LEAGUE EXPANSION COMMITTEE TO BRING BASEBALL BACK TO WASHINGTON IN 1993 WHEREAS, the Nation's Capital has been without a major league baseball team for twenty years and an entire generation of Washington kids has been deprived of the thrill of rooting for the home-town team; and WHEREAS, the National League Expansion Committee will soon visit Washington in its efforts to select two expansion franchises for the 1993 season; and WHEREAS, in addition to its prestige as the Nation's Capital, Washington has a number of outstanding assets that make it an obvious choice by the Expansion Committee: a metropolitan population of four million; a rich and diverse economy; a top television market; and an excellent stadium built for baseball and well-served by a superb, high-speed subway; and WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax has reaffirmed the position previously taken by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (Council) in June of 1984, supporting the efforts to obtain a new major league baseball franchise for the Nation's Capital. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax that: 1. The City Council expresses its continued support of bringing major league baseball back to the Washington metropolitan region. 2. The City Council expresses its support of the efforts of the District of Columbia Commission on Baseball and Washington Metropolitan Baseball in their efforts to bring baseball back to Washington. 3. The city Council urges the National League Expansion Committee to choose the Nation's Capital as one of the new baseball franchises to begin operation in the 1993 season.
