19900613 r-90-23RESOLUTION NO. R-90-23
A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BASEBALL COMMISSION
TO OBTAIN A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL FRANCHISE
FOR THE WASHINGTON AREA
WHEREAS, baseball is the national pastime, but the Nation's
Capital has endured nineteen long years without representation
by a major league baseball team; and
WHEREAS, major league baseball would provide a positive
impact on the Washington area's economic recreational, social
and civic life; and '
WHEREAS, the Washington area has excellent physical
facilities to support major league baseball, including an
outstanding stadium easily accessible by a safer and efficient
metrorail system, many new hotels and restaurants and other
tourist facilities; and
WHEREAS, baseball fans in the Washington area have
indicated their
strong support for a major league team by
depositing funds in special bank accounts to enable them to buy
season tickets when a team is established; and
WHEREAS, pre-season major league exhibition games over the
past four years in Washington have drawn larger crowds than have
similar games in all cities competing for expansion franchises;
and
WHEREAS, a National League franchise in Washington would
foster an even greater interest in baseball throughout the
entire area, thus complementing the already successful American
League franchise in Baltimore;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and members
of the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, hereby
enthusiastically support the efforts of the District of Columbia
Baseball Commission to obtain a major league baseball franchise

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be
forwarded to the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Baltimore,
the President of the National League, and the Commissioner of
Baseball urging them to use the full power of their offices to
return major league baseball to the Washington area.
Adopted this 13th day of June , 1990.
