PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT
WHEREAS, protection and preservation of the environment
enhances the quality of life in the City of Fairfax and is of
paramount importance to the future of the entire planet; and
WHEREAS, through various policies and practices, local
governments should actively support and promote programs and
projects which protect the delicate balance of the ecosystem in our
area; and
WHEREAS, the City's Comprehensive Plan calls for the
acquisition and retention of stream and flood plain areas for open
space and recreation; and
WHEREAS, the City's Comprehensive Plan calls for planting of
trees, reduction of traffic congestion and participation in
regional initiatives to reduce air pollutants; and
WHEREAS, the City's Comprehensive Plan calls for the
monitoring, identification and cleanup of pollutants in our
streams; and
WHEREAS, the City's storm drainage policy and erosion and
sediment control ordinances provide for a reduction in degradation
of the City's creeks by erosion and silt; and
WHEREAS, the City's solid waste programs include source
reduction, material separation and recycling; and
WHEREAS, the City currently has programs to recycle
newspapers, aluminum cans, brush, leaves office paper and white
goods; and '
WHEREAS, the City supports the erection of noise walls to
reduce the effect of traffic noise on residential neighborhoods;
and
WHEREAS, the City supports programs aimed at reducing and/or
eliminating litter along our highways and in public areas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Fairfax, and
its elected officials and employees, will continue to provide
environmentally sound programs and practices, to consider the
environment in its ordinances and policies, and to pursue
additional initiatives aimed at improving and preserving the
environment within the constraints of a prudent fiscal policy.
