RESOLUTION TO REMIND THE PLANNING COMMISSION
OF ITS PURPOSE AS SET FORTH IN SECTION 2-26 OF
THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA
WHEREAS, the Purpose of the Planning Commission has been set
forth in the City Code; and
WHEREAS, the Purpose includes planning for the future
development of transportation systems and highway facilities which
may "grow in a manner consonant with the efficient and economic use
of public funds"; and
WHEREAS, the Planning Commission on several recent occasions
has waived the subdivision requirements for dedication of right-
of-way, construction of street improvements and width of pavement
for public streets and private accessways; and
WHEREAS, these waivers were granted without appropriate
justification; and
WHEREAS, provisions of these street requirements by the City
in the future may create a need for the allocation of substantial
public funds;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Fairfax on this llth day of $%!]y , 1989, that the
Planning Commission be reminded to adhere to its Purpose as set
forth in Section 2-26 of the Fairfax City Code:
"The planning commission shall serve primarily in an
advisory capacity to the city council in order to assist
in the improvement of public health, safety, convenience
and welfare of the citizens; and to plan for the future
development of the city so that residential areas may be
provided with healthy surroundings, so that the needs of
industry and business may be recognized and so that
transportation systems, highway, utility, health,
educational, recreational facilities and the city itself
all may grow in a manner consonant with the efficient and
economical use of public funds. (Code 1966, Section
2-15)"
And to support the Comprehensive Plan which states, "Dedic-
ation of rights-of-way and contributions for improvements by
developers of adjacent properties are encouraged to accommodate
future options for public streets and trails."
