A RESOLUTION TO ENDORSE THE BYLAWS OF THE BOARD OF
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW, TO ENCOURAGE ANNUAL TRAINING
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ITS MEMBERS, AND TO ESTABLISH POLICY
REGARDING THE FILLING OF VACANCIES.
WHEREAS, the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) is charged
with regulating exterior architectural features and landscaping
of structures, buildings or improvements to be erected,
reconstructed, substantially altered or restored within the Old
and Historic District or any architectural control district; and
WHEREAS, the BAR has approved a set of bylaws (November 2,
1988, as amended October 4, 1989) which incorporates design
review guidelines and criteria as established in the City Code;
and
WHEREAS, the City Council is charged with appointing
members to the BAR and recognizes that vacancies on the BAR
should be filled as soon as possible with qualified individuals,
as described in Sec. 26-204 of the City Code; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires that all members of the
BAR be given the opportunity to enhance their backgrounds in
areas related to historic preservation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Fairfax that the BAR Bylaws, as amended October 4, 1989, are
hereby endorsed and accepted;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council encourages, in
addition to staff-provided orientation for new BAR members,
training opportunities on an annual basis for BAR members in
areas related to historic preservation, particularly those
sessions sponsored by the Preservation Alliance of Virginia, the
National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park
Service, or the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
