19731204 r-73-33 R-73-33 RESOLUTION TO CREATE A COMMUNITY BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE FOR THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax in order to plan an appropriate program in celebration of the forthcoming American Bicentennial in 1976~ and WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax in its desire to par- ticipate in the nation's Bicentennial celebration, recognizes the need for developing specific guidelines for a City-wide program that will reflect Fairfax's rich historical heritage, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, that there is hereby created a Community Bicentennial Committee, consisting of representatives from all segments of the community to begin planning and de- veloping appropriate programs for the City's participation in this national commemoration. 1. Membership. The Committee shall consist of six members including a chairman, all of whom shall be appointed by the City Council. All appointees shall be citizens and residents of the City. Three members shall be appointed from nominations submitted by civic associations and fraternal groups of the City. One member shall be selected from nominees submitted by the City of Fairfax Chamber of Commerce. Two members shall be selected from among citizens at large. City staff liaison, budgeting and execution of pro- grams developed by the Committee and direction of promotional activities shall be provided by the Director of Public Information in cooperation with other departments of the City government. 2. Meetings.. Meetings of the Committee, which shall be open to the public, shall be held periodically as deemed necessary by the R-73-33 - 2 - members of the Committee. 3. Responsibilities. The committee is charged with: A. Designing an appropriate commemoration program for the City of Fairfax according to objectives and thematic areas recommended by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission in Washington, D. C. B. Developing and submitting an appropriate program designed to insure the City's designation by the National Committee as a "Bicentennial Community". Such plan will include recommendations for a special community event or events and at least one project that will serve as a lasting reminder of the special effort undertakenby the City for the Bicentennial commemoration. C. Coordinating with the Virginia State Bicentennial Commission and committees created in surrounding jurisdictions whenever appropriate. D. Insuring appropriate coordination with individuals and community groups and such City agencies, committees and commissions whose plans and activities may bear on those of the Committee. E. All programs, special events and projects recom- mended by the Committee shall be presented to the City Council December 4, 1973. for approval.
