RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX TO SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATE IN THE
VIRGINIA 250 COMMEMORATION
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax, Virginia became an independent incorporated city in 1961
and today is a thriving community with a diverse population; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax was part of Fairfax County established in 1742 and home to
George Washington and George Mason, who played critical roles in the quest for independence --from
writing the "Fairfax Resolves" in 1774 to the American victory at Yorktown, VA in 1781; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax has its own unique history and is committed to the
furtherance of economic vitality and tourism and the tenets of Connecting Fairfax City's Past and
Present to Build a More Equitable and Inclusive Future for All; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia General Assembly created the Virginia American 250 Commission
(VA250) in 2020 for the purpose of preparing for and commemorating the 250th anniversary of our
country's independence and Virginia's participation and importance in achieving that independence;
and
WHEREAS, VA250 has requested that each locality form a committee to aid in the planning
for the commemoration period envisioned as 2024 through 2031; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax will form a local VA250 Committee with direction from the
City Council and under the coordination of the Office of Historic Resources in collaboration and
partnership with city departments including Parks and Recreation, Economic Development, the City
Manager's Office, and Communications and Marketing along with Fairfax County Public Schools,
Historic Fairfax City, Inc., and adult and youth community organizations; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax 250 Committee will plan and coordinate programs and
initiatives occurring within the City of Fairfax and communicate regularly with VA250 partners to
promote and commemorate the Semi quincentennial of the nation; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax,
Virginia, that it hereby resolves to support the 250th commemoration of Virginia's participation in
American independence.
