PROCESS FOR RENAMING STREETS RESULTING FROM
THE CITY COUNCIL INITIATED
CONNECTING FAIRFAX CITY FOR ALL
STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS
WHEREAS, the City Council is actively engaged with the community on a range of issues of concern to residents
who live, work and play in the City. Recognizing the strength that accrues with a diverse community, the Council
has acknowledged the need for broader community conversations in the areas of racial and social equity, systemic
racism, symbolism, and identity; and
WHEREAS, In the Fall of 2020, the City Council created a Stakeholder Advisory Group with the stated purpose
of "engaging in dialogue about issues regarding the City's historical past and its current issues regarding equity,
inclusion, and social justice in order to make recommendations to City Council to shape the desired future in
alignment with Council's goals of building an inclusive community;" and
WHEREAS, the City Council adopted the Street Naming and Renaming Policy (the Policy) on April 12, 2022 to
govern both the naming of new streets and the renaming of existing streets within the municipal boundaries of the
City, to provide for a specific, consistent and quantifiable process for street naming and renaming conventions;
and
WHEREAS, Connecting Fairfax City for All City Council Subcommittee recommends the City Council
establish a process for the collection and consolidation of new names, to be implemented following City Council
action to remove certain street names, as recommended by the Stakeholder Advisory Group.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby adopts the following process for
collection and consolidation of new street names as recommended by the Connecting Fairfax City for All City
Council Subcommittee:
During the 60 day puhlic comment period, staff will solicit feedback from residents and business owners through
the following means:
• An article will be written for the July Cityscene, in Cityclips, on Engage and the City website requesting
ideas for new street names consistent with Section VI of the Policy
• City will work with affected communities and their points of contact to publicize within the neighborhood,
notifying residents on options to provide suggestions
• Targeted outreach to encourage participation:
o Door hangers on affected streets
• Residents and Business owners will be asked to submit names:
o Electronically through the City Website - Street Name Ideas Form; or
o Manually via a drop box at City Hall in the atrium and at the Museum and Visitors Center
Following the 60 day comment period, staff will compile suggested street names to prepare for Council
consideration:
• The list of names will be evaluated through GIS and Historic Resources to ensure all names for
consideration comply with Section V of the Policy
o The remaining names will be forwarded to the Connecting Fairfax City For All City Council
Subcommittee for further review
• The subcommittee will narrow the feedback to a consolidated list of names for consideration.
• Those recommended names will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration and adoption.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED This resolution shall be effective immediately upon approval.
