RESOLUTION TO CREATE A CORE VALUES STATEMENT FOR THE CITY OF
FAIRFAX
WHEREAS, The Mayor and City Council adopted the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive
Plan in February 2019; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax 2035 Comprehensive Plan includes the Vision Statement,
"Fairfax City is a Vibrant, livable, 2151— Century community with a strong, sustainable
economy that supports walkable, safe and convenient access to the natural and built
environment;" and
WHEREAS, the Vision Statement is an aspirational description of future success; and
WHEREAS, the Vision Statement in conjunction with the City Council's Strategic Goals,
describes the City's "Envisioned Future;" and
WHEREAS, Core Values are the essential, central and enduring tenets of an organization;
and
WHEREAS, Core Values must withstand the test of time, even if circumstances change
dramatically; and
WHEREAS, Core Values are not operating practices, business strategies or cultural norms,
and;
WHEREAS, Core Values are integral to the work of effective Ieadership;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fairfax
hereby approves the effort to develop Core Values for the City of Fairfax organization as
generally described herein, to include, but not be limited to, representatives from the
following City operations:
I . City Manager's Office
2. City Attorney
3. Human Services
4. City Clerk
5. Economic Development Office
6. Department of Finance
7. Department of Public Works
8. Department of Parks and Recreation
9. Department of Community Development and Planning
10. Office of Communications and Marketing
11. Office of Historic Resources and Museums
12. Office of Human Resources
13. Police Department
14. Fire and Rescue Department
15. Department of Information Technology
NOW THEREFORE IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that City Schools, General Registrar,
Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer and Office of the Circuit Court Clerk will be
partners in developing the City's Core Values, and ;
NOW THEREFORE IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED that City Council will be briefed
throughout the development of the Core Values Statement and will have an opportunity to
consider and approve the recommended Core Values in fall 2020.
