AMENDMENT TO RESOLUTION R-09-29
RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH AN ENVIRONMENTAL
SUSTAINIBILITY
COMMITTEE FOR THE CITY OF FAIRFAX
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax is engaged in the regional efforts to support
initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts and energy demands from urban
development; and
WHEREAS, the City Council realizes the need to establish an Environmental
Sustainability Committee to advise and assist the City Council on policies and
practices dealing with the environment, sustainability and energy conservation.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL that:
1. The purpose and function of the Committee will include the following, but is
not limited exclusively to these items,
a. To act as an advocate for protecting, preserving and enhancing the
environment as it relates to issues under consideration by the City
Council and Planning Commission.
b. To serve in an advisory role to the City Council and all Boards and
Commissions on environmental and sustainability policy issues. The
committee may recommend new ordinances, amendments to existing
ordinances and other actions it deems appropriate. The committee may
also recommend expenditures in connection with proposed programs.
c. To provide a means for promoting discussion and education on
issues related to the environment and sustainability.
d. To advise and support the neighborhood recycling program.
e. To prepare an annual report to be presented to the City Council
which includes, but is not limited to these items:
• any findings on the current condition of the city's
environment.
• proposed policies and programs that support the
preservation, protection and enhancement of the city's
environment and sustainability.
• evaluation of existing programs and policies to protect
the environment and improve the city's sustainability.
• summary of the Committee actions and
recommendations of the previous year.
2. The Environmental Sustainability Committee shall be comprised of nine
members.
a. Eight members will be appointed by the City Council for a two year
term. Members will be selected based on their interest and experience
in environmental and sustainability issues. As possible, the City
Council will seek to include one member from the City of Fairfax
business community. City residency is not required for committee
members selected from the City of Fairfax business community.
b. The ninth member shall be a member of the City School Board who
is designated annually by the Board.
c. One member should be selected to act as a liaison for the
neighborhood recycling program.
d. The committee chairperson and vice chairperson shall be elected
annually by the committee in June.
e. The committee will meet monthly, except for August.
f. The Sustainability Coordinator will provide support for the
Committee.
