RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH AN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINIBILITY
COMMITTEE FOR THE CITY OF FAIRFAX
WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax is engaged in the regional efforts to support
initiatives aimed at reducing energy demands acid envirommental impacts from urban
development; and
WHEREAS, the City Council realizes the need to establish an Environmental
Sustainability Committee to advise and assist the City Council on policies and practices
dealing with the environment and. energy conservation-
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL that:
1. The purpose and function of the Committee will include the fo llowing, bui is not
limited exclusively to these items,
a. To act as an advocate for protecting, preserving and enhancing the
environment as it relates to issues under consideration by the City Council and
Planning Comiriission.
b_ To serve in an advisory role to the City Council and all Boards and
Commissions on environmental policy issues. The committee may recomnicnd
new ordinances, amendments to existing ordinances and other actions it deems
appropriate. The committee may also recommend expendirirres in connection
with proposed programs.
c_ To provide a means for promoting discussion between the public and private
sectors on issues related to the environment.
d. To facilitate oversight and communication between the community association
recycling chairpersons.
e. To prepare a report to be given annually by the committee chairperson to the
City Council which includes, but is not limited to these items:
- findings on the current condition of the city's environmental
resources.
- proposed policies and programs that support the preservation,
protection and enhancement of the city's environmental resources.
- evaluation as to the effectiveness of existing programs and policies to
protect the enviror~nient.
2_ The Environmental Sustainability Committee shall be comprised. of eight members
appointed by the City Council for a two year term.
a. The committee chairperson shall be elected annually by the committee in July.
b. Members will be selected based on their interest and experience in
environmental sustainability issues- If possible, membership should include
three members from the City of Fairfax business community. Citiy residency is
not required for business committee members.
c. One member should be selected to represent the community association
recycling program chairpersons.
d. The committee will meet bi-monthly unless additional meetings are required.
e. The Special Projects Engineer will provide support for the Committee.
