AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 7 OF THE ZONING
ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, TO
DEFINE THE LOCATION OF TEMPORARY REAL ESTATE
SIGNS AND THE LOCATION AND SIZE OF TEMPORARY
YARD SALES SIGNS.
BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia,
that Section 7 of the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Fairfax, Virginia, relatin
free-standing real estate signs, yard sale signs and "open house" signs, be
~nd it hereby is amended as follows:
l. Amend and reenact Subsection C.2(b) to read in its entirety as
follows:
"(b) No sign shall be located within the front fifteen (15)
feet of any required setback, except as otherwise pro-
vided in this Section. No signs may be placed in the
median strip of any road."
2. Amend and reenact Subsection D to read in its entirety as
roi lows:
"D. SIGNS PERMITTED WITHOUT A PERMIT
"The following signs are permitted without a permit provided they
conform to the regulations of the district in which they are to be
located as to size, location and type of construction:
"l. Church signs on church property, not to exceed twenty-four
(24) square feet.
"2. Signs on interior window glass, regardless of size.

Signs advertising for rent, sale or lease of dwellings
in "R" and 'IR-T" zones, limited to a maximum total area
of four (4) square feet per dwelling; provided that said
sign shall not be illuminated. Such signs may be placed
no closer than eight (8) feet from the curb or the edge
of the street pavement in the absence of a curb, and in
no way shall obstruct a pedestrian right-of-way, and
shall not exceed an overall height of five (5) feet.
"4.
Yard sale signs, not exceeding two (2) square feet. Such
yard sale signs may be posted for no more than twenty-four
(24) hours in advance of the day and time of the sale.
Such signs shall be removed by 9:00 p.m. of the final day
of the sale, and must be placed a minimum of eight (8)
feet back from the curb or the edge of the street pave-
ment in the absence of a curb.
"5. Directional signs, not exceeding two (2) square feet,
which are placed on private property with the permission

of the owner directing the public to the residence
for sale, rent or lease, or to yard sale. Such
directional sign may be placed no closer than eight
(8) feet from the curb or the edge of the street pave-
ment in the absence of a curb. In the case of a
directional sign for an 'Open House,' such sign must
be removed by 9:00 p.m. the day of the open house.
"6. Traffic signs, not exceeding two (2) square feet in
area, indicating entrance or exit.
"7.
Any flag, badge, or insignia customarily displayed by
any government or governmental agency or by any chari-
table, civic, fraternal, patriotic, religious or similar
organization, and customary temporary lighting and dis-
plays as a part of holiday decorations.
"8. Signs relating to customary home occupations allowed in
Section 2.09.
"9. No permit shall be required to change movable lettering
on a permitted sign.
"10. Political signs at a polling place for a period not to
exceed twenty-four (24) hours."
This ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its adoption
City Council of the City of Fairfax, Virginia.
